Etsy & Shopify product description examples: before and after

Five real rewrite patterns, across five different kinds of shops — plus the four habits behind every one of them. No signup required; skim it, use whichever parts are useful, and rewrite your own listings with them if you'd rather do it yourself.

Handmade jewelry

Before

Sterling silver necklace. Adjustable chain. Makes a great gift.

After

Solid sterling silver, hand-finished and hallmarked — an 16–18" adjustable chain so it sits right whether it's layered or worn alone, gift-boxed and ready to hand over as-is.

Why it works: The "after" answers the three questions every jewelry buyer actually has before they click Buy: what is it really made of, will it fit, and does it arrive ready to give.

Candles & home fragrance

Before

Soy candle, vanilla scent. Long burn time. Great for any room.

After

Hand-poured soy wax with a cotton wick and real vanilla bean oil — a clean, 45+ hour burn that fills a living room without turning cloying by hour two.

Why it works: Naming the wick, the burn time, and the specific room-size use case does the reassurance work that "great for any room" was trying (and failing) to do.

Pet accessories

Before

Cute dog bandana. Available in several sizes. Fits most breeds.

After

Reversible cotton bandana that snaps onto any collar in seconds — sized small, medium and large so it actually fits a chihuahua or a lab, not just 'most' dogs.

Why it works: 'Fits most breeds' is the line buyers scroll past because it sounds unverified. Naming the actual size range and how it attaches removes the doubt.

Personalized gifts

Before

Custom engraved keychain. Personalize with any name. Perfect present.

After

Laser-engraved on solid brass, your name or short message hand-checked by us before it ships — a five-minute personalization that still arrives in time to wrap.

Why it works: Personalized-gift buyers are anxious about typos and late delivery above everything else. Naming the proofing step and the material is what actually earns the sale, not the word 'perfect'.

Apparel & prints

Before

Cool graphic tee. 100% cotton. Available in multiple sizes and colors.

After

Screen-printed by hand, one shirt at a time, on heavyweight 240gsm cotton — a relaxed, true-to-size fit, with a print built to outlast the trend it started with.

Why it works: Anyone can write '100% cotton'. Naming the actual fabric weight and how the fit runs (true-to-size vs. oversized) answers the two questions that decide whether an apparel buyer trusts the size chart — and neither is something a template can guess for you.

The four habits behind every rewrite above

Name the specific material, size, or process — not the category

"Sterling silver" beats "quality jewelry." "45+ hour burn" beats "long lasting." Specifics read as true; adjectives read as marketing.

Answer the one worry that stops this exact buyer

A personalized-gift buyer worries about typos and shipping deadlines. A jewelry buyer worries about fit and material. Write to that worry directly instead of a generic benefit list.

Describe how it is made, not just what it is

Hand-poured, hand-finished, hand-checked, screen-printed one at a time — process details are the easiest way to sound like a real small maker instead of a dropshipped template.

Cut the words that could describe any product

"Great gift," "high quality," "perfect for any occasion," and "check it out" appear on thousands of listings and add zero information. If a sentence could sit on a competitor's page unchanged, rewrite it.
